Happy Anzac Day poem

And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”

When I was a young man I carried my pack
And I lived the free life of a rover
From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my Matilda all over
Then in nineteen fifteen my country said Son
It’s time to stop rambling ’cause there’s work to be done
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they sent me away to the war
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As we sailed away from the quay
And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the cheers
We sailed off to Gallipoli

How well I remember that terrible day
How the blood stained the sand and the water
And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well
He chased us with bullets, he rained us with shells
And in five minutes flat he’d blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to Australia
But the band played Waltzing Matilda
As we stopped to bury our slain
We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs
Then we started all over again

Now those that were left, well we tried to survive
In a mad world of blood, death and fire
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
But around me the corpses piled higher
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over tit
And when I woke up in my hospital bed
And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead
Never knew there were worse things than dying
For no more I’ll go waltzing Matilda
All around the green bush far and near
For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs two legs
No more waltzing Matilda for me

So they collected the cripples, the wounded, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where my legs used to be
And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
Then turned all their faces away

And now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
And I watch my old comrades, how proudly they march
Reliving old dreams of past glory
And the old men march slowly, all bent, stiff and sore
The forgotten heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask, “What are they marching for?”
And I ask myself the same question
And the band plays Waltzing Matilda
And the old men answer to the call
But year after year their numbers get fewer
Some day no one will march there at all

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who’ll go a waltzing Matilda with me
And their ghosts may be heard as you pass the Billabong
Who’ll go a waltzing Matilda with me?

Happy Anzac Day Sayings

To-day is ANZAC day!!! Let us all remember the ultimate sacrifice paid by all servicemen who are laid to rest on foreign shores in the name of freedom.

Why is ANZAC day so important to me…. Because I remember both where I came from with family history and why the country I love is the way it is. I then get to stop and be thankful which I should do a lot more often but always at least do today for the things I love including family, football living by the beach. I know what u have sacrificed and what u continue to sacrifice for me and my country so that I can live the way I do and so I can openly share this opinion. Just a few small things in so many I know are my rights. So to all current soldiers and past, to all theirs family’s who pay a bigger price than I know I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER.

We do not glorify war on Anzac Day. Far from it. We remember the dreadful loss of lives in the many gallant battles fought by those brave young men who stepped forward when called upon to serve their country. Nor are we aggressive, but we believe in showing the future enemy that we are so determined to defend our shores that he should think twice before taking on the Sons of Anzac!

I wonder why there is no Anzac service to remember all the women who were raped in wars? All the innocent people and children maimed and blown up… I wonder why I am supposed to believe the gruesome ugly reality of war is ever ever ever ok to be considered patriotic Australian.

Anzac Day is not just about those we have lost fighting for our country but also about those who are currently fighting for the country we know and love… The Anzacs were the first to fight and made we who we are today… Lest we forget…

Happy Anzac Day greetings

Words don’t suffice, but will have to do; thank you so very much to the brave who fought and those who stayed behind. Would have been tough either way. Happy ANZAC day.

Please Australian do not forget Gurkhas on ANZAC day. During the ultimately unsuccessful Gallipoli campaign in 1915, the Gurkhas were among the first to arrive and the last to leave…..

Lest We Forget. Thinking especially of all those brave souls whose memory will soon be commemorated in Sparrow – A Chronicle of Defiance. In the lead up to ANZAC Day, I am reminded daily of how important that I complete this project. I’m now near the last hurdle. Watch this space.

Happy ANZAC Day.
Thank you to all the men and women who fought and died with the foresight to forge a way for generations to come.

Anzac day is a time to reflect on the men and women, Past & Present, Who Have displayed courage and self sacrifice serving our country.

It’s Anzac Day today – just taking a moment out of my busy life to thank the people all over the world who fight for human rights so that the rest of us are able to live worry free. Thank you to each and everyone of you.

Aussies! Kiwis! On ANZAC day I wish your military well, may their fights be just and their sacrifices they suffer always be worth the good it can bring to the world.
Question! What do you say? Happy Anzac day doesn’t seem right…

Its a Big Ashes year and return series with the Kiwis but wouldn’t you want these Countries with you in times of trouble!….My Best on ANZAC Day.

It’s ANZAC Day here in Australia. If you are glad that Japanese isn’t the official language here, then thank a soldier……. We had a lovely day out talking the girls out for a climb up one of the local Glass House Mountains, Mount Ngungun. Beautiful views all around, we could even make out the skyscrapers of Brisbane in the distance.

Happy Anzac Day Quotes

Think that its quite disrespectful how some people uz Anzac day as a day to get pissed & smashed off their face. Solders were fought & killed for the freedom to live.

Another Anzac Day in Paradise. Didn’t win the middle but boy howdy I donated some cash to a few diggers ;) Somehow I think they deserve every win they get. Thanks again gents.

With all those who fight and have fought to represent our country I say thank you! May all those who have lost their lives due to war may you rest in peace! Lest we Forget! ANZAC Day 2013 on this 98th year of commemoration!

It’s ANZAC Day. A day of remembrance for those who fought for our country and way of life. Please do not belittle it by saying “happy ANZAC Day”. There is nothing happy about it.

On this day, ANZAC day, I want to thank all our comrades in arms in Australia and New Zealand (like Ray O’Donoghue) who have fought valiantly by our side through many a great conflict. The sacrifices of your countrymen, especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, will not be forgotten…. Here’s a toast!

  • ANZAC DAY IS NEARLY UPON US

ANZAC DAY IS NEARLY UPON US.
LET US REMEMBER THOSE BRAVE SOULS WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE SO WE COULD BE FREE.
LEST WE FORGET.

  • People Living In Australia

Anzac Day is for not only remembering those who have fallen but also those who continue the fight for freedom & democracy. To say that Anzac Day could be considered upsetting to multicultural people living in Australia, I have only to what a load of bull shit. These people come to our Country (8th generation Australian) they will abide by our laws and our way of life. Dont like it, go back to whatever rock you crawled out from. First you want to abolish Christmas then our national anthem, then easter etc etc. If we tried that in quite a few overseas countries we would be either laughed out of town or maybe even killed.

  • Celebrate Anzac Day

I will always celebrate Anzac Day not only as a former Australian Army soldier,
but also for my father (Vietnam) my uncle (vietnam & Korea) and grandfathers (2nd world war).

  • Brave Soldiers Are In Our Hearts

♥Lest we forget these brave soldiers going into war just to protect our freedom ♥
♥ risking their own lives for the sake of others back home, ♥
♥you all brave soldiers are in our hearts and never forgotten ♥

ANZAC Day Sms & Messages

  • Perhaps As ANZAC Day Approaches

Perhaps as ANZAC day approaches,
those who would tear it down or deride it should be thankful
and remember those who served and still do,
enabling them the ability to voice such discontent.

  • Remember Anzac Day

Remember Anzac day is a day to remember the people who gave their lives
and future up for us to have the lives we lead now
not a day to get drunk

  • We Will Remember Them

At Lou’s we believe our Digger’s should be remembered every day of the year but especially on Anzac Day.
This is why we will be closed all day at both stores on Anzac day Wednesday.
“Ode of Remembrance”
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lest we Forget.
